Tonight, one of our smaller importer/distributors will be behind the Tasting Bar sharing wine from two of their lovely estates! We have a great value New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and three wines from Stellenbosch Vineyards in South Africa.
Stellenbosch Vineyards has history dating back to 1690 with the historic Welmoed Farm being one of the oldest farms in the region. They produce both classic versions of South African wines that celebrate their heritage and innovative wines that help to set the standards of what is possible for one of the leading wine producers and exporters in South Africa.
- Mokoroa Sauvignon Blanc 2016: This vintage was a fantastic year for Marlborough as a whole and particularly for the Awatere Valley. It is a cooler subzone of Marlborough and makes aromatic wines with complex fruit character. The vines are planted on glacial river terraces in the Awatere Valley that are cooler and windier than the rest of Marlborough. Yields are reduced, leading to more intensely flavored fruit. Throughout the process, sustainable practices are followed and both vineyard and winery are government certified sustainable. The winemaking is minimal intervention at cool temperatures to retain aroma and intensity. It has a bright nectarine and gooseberry nose. On first sip, you notice the fresh acidity before being hit by loads of luscious fruit – passion fruit, gooseberry, nectarine, grapefruit. Mouthwatering! Pair with salads, broiled white fish, grilled shellfish, quiche, crab cakes, and milder Asian dishes.
- Stellenbosch Vineyards Bushvine Chenin Blanc 2014: Sourced from the Helderberg region of Stellenbosch, this is a modern-style Chenin Blanc grown in the traditional bush vine (or gobelet) method. Whole bunch crushed, barrel-fermented with natural yeast, and barrel-aged in French oak barrels, before undergoing a barrel selection and final blending. It shows elegance and finesse. Lush, juicy fruit with a rich palate that is full of honey, apples, and spicy vanilla. Has a wonderful texture that would pair great with poached fish or roasted chicken. Also, try this with spicy curries or stir fries.
- Stellenbosch Vineyards Bushvine Pinotage 2014: Sourced from the Helderberg region of Stellenbosch, this hand-picked Pinotage showcases how excellent this variety can be when treated correctly! Pinotage was the creation of Abraham Izak Perold and is the cross of Cinsault (which he called Hermitage) with Pinot Noir … get it Pinot-age! The original cross was made in 1925, only produced four seeds, and those were nearly lost to history a couple of times before it became one of the most widely planted grapes in South Africa. This wine undergoes natural fermentation in open tanks and is barrel-aged. It has a rich, aromatic nose full of black and red fruits that continue onto the palate and are supported by spicy undertones of cinnamon and oak. This is an ideal pairing for any grilled meat: chicken, pork, lamb, beef, or game!
- Four Secrets Sparkling Shiraz NV: A four vintage blend, all handpicked in mid/late-march and fermented in stainless steel tanks for 10 days. Aged in 300-liter French oak barrels (50% first fill and 50% second fill) with barrel selection made each year to ensure that the best barrels are being used every year. This sparkling red is not cloying sweet or bone dry. It hits you in the nose with aromas of red berries, vanilla, and hints of black pepper. The barrels balance out the fruitiness on the palate with some spiciness, nicely integrated oak, and tannins. Enjoy this one at a barbecue with grilled meats, on its own, with cheese, or be wild, pair it with dessert!
